Arthur Abelmann (1888-1934), chemist and pharmacist, founded the »Chemisch Pharmazeutische AG, Bad Homburg«, which grew into a successful pharmaceutical company by 1932. Known for its chamomile-based products such as Kamillosan, Spirobismol, and Transpulmin, the company embodied Abelmann's vision of creating remedies to improve people's lives and leaving a legacy for his family.
The rise of National Socialism destroyed this dream. In 1933, Hitler's regime imposed a boycott on Jewish businesses, forcing Abelmann to resign and sell his company to Degussa and IG Farben. Shortly afterward, Abelmann fled into exile in Switzerland with his family but passed away a short time later. In 1939, his widow, children, and elderly mother fled to New York to find safety, while they watched the horrors in Europe from afar.
»Shifting Paths« documents these turbulent years and traces Abelmann's journey – from his youth in Riga, his service in World War I, and the establishment of his company to his family's struggle for survival.
In 2024, I accompanied Arthur Abelmann's grandson, Charles Abelmann, in Bad Homburg and Frankfurt am Main to document his research for the planned documentary film »Shifting Paths«. This »footage excerpt« provides a glimpse into our shared journey through various corporate and city archives, as well as pharmacies in the Frankfurt area.

I'm Philipp (b. 1991), photographer and videographer with a focus on people, the reality of their personal lives and their environment. As a multimedia storyteller, my goal is to convey information and emotions sensitively – and in a way that best suits the story. Besides my personal practice I work for newspapers, magazines and in corporate contexts.
I enjoy delving deep into a subject, explore my surroundings by running, hiking and climbing, and love to spend time in the forest just behind where I live.
My »professional home« is the photojournalism and documentary photography. In the discipline of the same name I graduated 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover. Parallel to my studies – as a freelancer and producer in a media agency – I expanded my know-how in moving images and found new visual approaches for my work in the combination of photo and video.
